Progress made
Okay, so I told you earlier this week that I was going to enter a triathlon and I would give you updates on my training progress... Here are the updates. I have a very long road ahead of me.
I took swimming lessons when I was like... I don't know.... six, maybe? And I wasn't taught the breaststroke. So really, swimming is my biggest challenge. I can do a breaststroke now, self taught. But my endurance is, well.... lacking. Here's the lowdown on what took place this week...
On Monday evening I went to the local (indoor) pool and took with me a towel and a swimsuit. I ask the lifeguard on duty how long one length of the pool is, I need to eventually do a mile, so if she knew how many laps that would be, that would be helpful information. She told me to go talk to the older gentleman that was swimming laps on the other side of the pool, he would know. So I go over there and tell him that I am beginning training for a triathlon, and I need to know how many laps is a mile... Turns out he is training for the very same one! Cool! So I find out that one lap is 25 yards...translated, one mile = 70 laps or 35 down and backs. YIKES! Okay, well, better get started. He asked if I had goggles... um... no, I don't. Well, you're gonna need some, he says, and loans me his extra pair. Lets just say the first lap was grueling. Holy Cow! I'm never gonna make it!
Fast forward to Friday....
I now have my own goggles, a new swim suit (better suited for lap swimming), and I can do 4 laps without stopping and I can still breath when I finish them! I did a total of 400 yards on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. And in fact, Friday I actually did 500 yards. SO progress is being made in the swimming department.
As for biking, I am not too terribly worried about it. I am probably going to need another bicycle. I have a mountain bike and I need a road bike. But, I can bike for long periods of time. And if I need to stop, I won't drown. I have been doing about 5 minutes on the stationary bike each time I go.
Running... I used to run many years ago. I then had children and gained a few, shall we say, curves. I haven't done a lot of running lately. Up until I became pregnant with my last child I was walking/jogging almost every day. So this portion of the race also doesn't worry me too much. So there you have it. Week one of training complete. We'll see how next week goes....
Oh, and a side benefit.... Since Monday I have lost 3 pounds! Yay me!!
